A note from Marion:
The Main event was for Friday, May 17.
Folks would start coming in on Thursday, so we planned a cookout. No ones
wants to be stuck in a motel room by themselves. J.C. and Catharine Hamm
Long came from Bay Minette, AL, Peggy Patterson McClellan came from Ocala,
FL, Russell and Faye Kartrude flew into Charlotte NC and drove down in
their motor coach, which they parked at our house. Cliff (Jay) and Barbara
(Haugh '55) Lissenden drove over from Southport, NC, Chuck and Mary Ellen
Rost Buehring came from Tega Cay, SC. Lester Crosby (who was married to
our classmate Pat Moree, deceased) brought his lovely Dianne, they live
about 25 mile away. Clint and I made the number thirteen. We were
joined the next day by: Ken Fairbanks, who drove up from Marietta, GA and
Lanier and Barbara Tucker Dasher from Decatur, GA. A group ventured down
the mountains, which include: Nancy Percy Hogarth from Hiawassee, GA,
Carolyn Suddath Riddle from Franklin, NC and Bill and Sylvia Davis Dawson
from Mountain City, GA. Wayne and Mary Louise Collette Snyder came across
the mountains from Dalton, GA. Karl and Marcie (Hartley '55) Fairbanks
(Ken's twin) live in Orange Park, FL, but were returning from a trip from
Branson, MO in their motor coach and timed it so they could join us. We had
23 present, 15 class members and 8 spouses. Some of us had been together
since third grade. Most had to return home but those who stayed came out
to our house for a wine and cheese party, with lots of good conversation. A
highlight of the event for me was to get to know some of the spouses, our
classmates made some fantastic choices. At the big reunions we're so
excited seeing our classmates that sometimes we neglect their mates. These
small gatherings help us get to know each other better. I WOULD LIKE TO
STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU GET OUR CLASSMATES TOGETHER IN YOUR AREA, it is
well worth the effort. Some folks that wanted to attend but could not:
Sam and Yvonne (Crosby, 54) Mudano, she was just getting over surgery.
Buford and Mary Louise Munn Bennett, she has just had knee replacement
surgery. Neville and Jean MacBean, he has had surgery but is doing great,
hopes to come to the next one. C.B. and Pat Joyner, are on their way to
Alaska. Matt and Ann Lawler Scurry went to Mexico to a wedding. Bill and
Kline Reed had another commitment. Mary Gans Hoefs had a convention in
Charlotte, NC. Shirley Wood Tenaglia had just scheduled a golf date in the
mountains of PA. Gail Tathwell Nobles is having work done on her house.
Donia Yurkiewicz Eichfield had a calendar conflict. Faye Anthony Smith had
a conflict but is coming to the 50th for sure. Richard Burrer said it was a
little far to come for lunch, but he is with us in heart. John Ligon tried
to come but could not make it. Jack and Joan Starr were on a trip in their
Airstream. Ron Cagle was getting his book to the publisher. Marilyn
Hardwick Burgess had company. Edith Moore Bonner will try to join us next
time. Harry Reynolds lives in Auburn, GA, and could not be with us. Peter
Irons and his wonderful Nancy were in England and Scotland. Robert and Judy
Moore sent regrets. Bob and Ann Earnest are going to make it one of these
days. WHAT A BUSY BUNCH OF WONDERFUL FRIENDS WE HAVE... In closing I
would like to thank my husband of 45 years, Clint Whitehurst, who makes all
things possible. LOVE TO YOU ALL.
